Emerging Disruptive Technology Assessment Symposium | Information and Influence

The 2024 Emerging and Disruptive Technology Assessment Symposium (EDTAS) featured key note presentations and panels of subject matter experts and thought leaders in the modern landscape of information and influence.

The EDTAS series helps to future-proof Australian Defence. Originally an initiative of the Next Generation Technologies Fund, the EDTAS considers an expansive science and technology topic that will likely have a major impact for Defence in an extended timeframe.

Hosted by Defence Science and Technology Group, in partnership with Atturra, the EDTAS on Information and Influence brought together internationally recognised academic, industry and Defence leaders in a multidisciplinary workshop environment over 2 days in Adelaide on 21-22 March 2024 to explore and shape a long term vision for Information and Influence.

Scope

The recent release of the Defence Strategic Review (DSR) put a spotlight on information warfare as a priority area for Defence and the newly formed Advanced Strategic Capabilities Accelerator (ASCA).

The symposium aimed to identify novel capability concepts for Defence toward 2035, and in the process, help to uncover the important research challenges and opportunities that lie ahead, which require awareness or action by government, academia and industry.

Research drivers, challenges and opportunities around the following key themes were explored:

  • Digitised Existence and Open Source Data
  • Vectors of Influence and Disinformation
  • Automation and AI in the Cyber Domain
  • Evolution of Generative AI and Synthetic Media

The outcomes of the symposium will be used to inform future S&T investment to deliver results for Defence, national security and the national interest.
